Emilio Sanchez was born in Camagüey, Cuba in 1921. He began his artistic studies in Mexico under the guidance of his stepfather Cossío del Pomar, the director of the art school of San Miguel de Allende. He then received a more formal training in New York at the Art Students League and at the Columbia University Art School. Sanchez moved permanently to Manhattan in 1952 where he lived until he died in 1999.
